Random Acts of Kindness Day is all about doing random "kindnesses" for random people. It's a win-win situation for both the giver and the receiver. Ideally, we should be doing acts of kindness every day - and many people do - but this is an official day and a wonderful opportunity to focus on others. What's more, kindness doesn't need to cost anything - it's the thought that counts. Smile at a stranger, let a motorist into the traffic, pay someone a compliment. The opportunities are endless and the more people that embrace it, the greater the impact.

Last year over 100 Napier inner city businesses thought of all sorts of creative and generous ways to participate in NZ's Random Acts of Kindness Day - always on 1st September. Initiated in 2005, this national day continues to gain momentum and Napier was the first city to embrace it on such a large scale

According to Mayor Barbara Arnott "Kindness makes the world go round. When you receive it you want to pass it on." She "RAK'd" random members of the public by paying for 40 cups of coffee at cafes around the inner city. Local National MP Chris Tremain spent two hours shining people's shoes and there was plenty of chocolate given away too - thanks to generous donations by Cadbury and the locally based Silky Oak Chocolate Company.

Many local churches and organisations also embraced the idea and planned thoughtful and pleasant ways to "RAK" the public - washing cars and giving away fruit, posies and home baking.

Youth from Napier Christian Fellowship gifted their time and energy to wash cars in an inner city car park.

A member of staff from Swain & Roberts Optometrists cleaned glasses for passersby & gifted lens cleaning cloths, providing recipients with a brighter outlook on Random Acts of Kindness Day.
