Ahmet Dindar (32) Owner of Café Anatolia (in Napier and Hastings)
Where were you born? Fatsa, in northern Turkey What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? A soldier How long have you been in this business? I started Café Anatolia in Hastings 2½ years ago and opened the Napier branch 1½ years ago. What were you doing before this? I was working as an electrician in Turkey when I was offered a job in New Zealand. I left my family behind and arrived in December '99 without being able to speak one word of English and started work as a chef in Nelson. What do you enjoy about working in Napier's inner city? It's a cosy place and the people are really friendly. Where do you see yourself in five years' time? I plan to open more cafes providing Turkish food. I also want to be able to sell Turkish products in the cafes. What motivates you? Being busy - I can't stop! I get bored easily and need to be working on different projects. What do you do for fun? I don't have a lot of free time, but I enjoy ravelling and visiting new places. If you could fulfil one wish what would it be? I want to just be comfortable - in every way. Having lots of money doesn't motivate me because it can't buy happiness. Recall a childhood incident that got you into trouble My memories are more about how I avoided trouble! As a teenager I used to work for my father in my spare time. He used to pay me very little money for my hard work. One day I sold a lot of product for him - valued at about 3000 Turkish lira, but I kept 2500 for myself and only gave him 500. Fortunately for me he didn't keep good accounting records so he never found out. I only told him about it 10 years' later. Favourite food A spicy Georgian-style lamb dish that my mother makes.
