Napier's unique Art Deco heritage |
On Tuesday, 3 February, 1931 Napier literally shook for two and a half minutes. 162 people died and the town was devastated, with almost all buildings in the inner city destroyed.
The extensive rebuilding that took place in the 1930s resulted in the rebirth of a modern Art Deco city that expressed vigour and optimism and gave Napier the unique appearance that locals and visitors so enjoy. Two years later most of the reconstruction was complete - the new buildings reflected the architects' forward-thinking vision and determination to turn tragedy into a timeless treasure that continues to evoke civic pride. Trained guides lead daily walks through the heart of the city, sharing interesting stories never recounted in history books.
The Art Deco Shop and information resource centre stocks gifts and souvenirs related to Napier's unique Art Deco architecture. The shop is also the starting point for several of the walks and tours.
