Leisure
Imagine sunshine, outdoor cafes, an appealing mix of shops, wide open spaces, stunning scenery, fun activities and a relaxed lifestyle....that's Napier! The combination of Napier's informal, relaxed lifestyle, great climate and Art Deco heritage make the city uniquely special and attractive.
An extensive walkway along Napier's scenic shoreline is a popular and relaxing option for locals and visitors. Wander through one of the inner city parks and gardens or take a guided Art Deco walk that meanders through the inner city.
Visit Marineland, the National Aquarium of New Zealand, Par 2 MiniGolf or the Skate Zone along the way or head in the opposite direction and enjoy a hot soak at Ocean Spa. Take advantage of all the activities and attractions that Napier has to offer. Make time to sample local wine or book a tour.
The CJ Pask Winery Great Long Lunch is a celebration of great local produce, wine and entertainment. Set in the picturesque seaside setting of the Marine Parade Gardens, overlooking the sea, this premier food and wine event is New Zealand's longest lunch. Over 800 lunch goers enjoy a sumptuous three-course meal at a table that stretches for almost 300 metres.
Inner city gardens
The attractive Sunken Garden on Marine Parade is maintained all year round and has stone pathways, paraplegic access, sheltered seating, and a water-lily sculpture feature. The Marine Parade Gardens extend from the War Memorial Centre to the Soundshell on the Marine Parade and overlook the Pacific Ocean with the rugged and dramatic cliffs of Cape Kidnappers in the distance.
Napier's Art Deco front garden was built on the rubble of the great 1931 Earthquake and is probably New Zealand's first urban sea-front. It includes the Veronica Sunbay, the Soundshell, the New Napier Arch and Colonnade, and the Tom Parker Fountain, all built in the 1930s, as well as the floral clock and the famous statue of Pania of the Reef. Spectacular at night, the gardens are a favourite promenade for locals and tourists. Clive Square Memorial Gardens offers a delightful oasis in the centre of Napier.
