The Napier we know today was shaped by one dramatic event - the Hawke's Bay earthquake.
On Tuesday, 3 February, 1931 Napier literally shook for two and a half minutes. 162 people died and the town was devastated, with almost all buildings in the inner city destroyed. The extensive rebuilding that took place in the 1930s resulted in the rebirth of a modern Art Deco city that expressed faith, courage and optimism and gave rise to Napier's unique appearance. Trained guides lead daily walks through the heart of the city, sharing interesting stories never recounted in history books.
